The Beginning
Thanks to blogs, I've learned, and I hope to continue learning, many things on very different topics: science, technology, history, literature... Mainly anecdotally, finding eye-catching headlines on sites like HackerNews or menéame. But when it comes to the topic I'm most passionate about and to which I dedicate the most hours a day, technology, I also regularly follow some blogs: Pragmatic Engineer, la Bonilista, ByteByteGo, Netflix Tech blog, and a few others, like that of my colleague Álex Fernández (aka Pinchito), although he's not as prolific as I'd like.
Those who know me well know that I've always loved learning and sharing knowledge. So, I feel the time has come for me to share what little I can or know.
It's strange to want to start a project like this in the middle of 2025, when almost everyone consumes 30-second video content and our attention spans are getting shorter. There's barely any room left for long texts. However, I think there's still a place for writing, and there are still people who like to relax and/or learn by reading. This blog is for you.
I've also been considering what language to write the blog in, since Spanish is one of my two native languages and is spoken by millions of people. However, in the tech world, the lingua franca—to this day—is English, and although I read a lot of texts in English every day, I don't write or speak as much as I'd like. So I'll write in English, and it will serve as a personal exercise.
One last note I want to make at the outset is the reason I chose Ghost as my platform. I considered several options: Substack, Ghost, Medium, WordPress, perhaps my own site on GitHub. The first thing I thought was that I should choose a tool that would make all the management and publishing much easier, to reduce friction when launching content. Also, and why not say it, one that also had a good discovery tool so I could reach more people. Based on this, I was left with two options: ghost and substack. I finally settled on Ghost for two reasons:
- It's an open-source project managed by a foundation that reinvests its profits into continuing to improve the project.
- It's built in Node.js!
As a bonus, they publish all their metrics, including profits and customers, in real time.
